30FT HORSES HEAD SET FOR GOODWOOD

JUNE 30th, 2010

Sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green has created a giant horse head that is not going to end up in your bed no matter how many you wiseguys you manage to offend. The Greekhead-Artemis sculpture is a 30ft bronze sculpture that is set to be unveiled at the Glorious Goodwood meeting next week. The sculpture is inspired by the horses of the Parthenon Frieze and has been created in a Liverpool foundry by Fiddian-Green and his well groomed team.

CHARGE AS YOU SKIP

JUNE 21st, 2010

Skipping is a great way to exercise; a unique combination of co-ordination and cardio-vascular as Mike Tyson, or indeed any other professional boxer will tell you. Now thanks to the e-rope, we can add energy efficiency to skipping’s list of virtues. The e-rope houses a pair of rechargeable batteries that charge as you skip, twenty minutes and you should be fully charged. Brilliant.

LIVING LAMPS

JUNE 9th, 2010

Conventional wisdom dictates that algae and home appliances are traditionally best kept apart. That’s set to change with the Latro Lamp; a lamp that is powered from electric currents generated during photosynthesis. Combining algae carbon dioxide and water, the lamp charges by a combination of sunlight and lamp owners breathing into the side of the lamp. Designer Mike Thompson encourages Latro Lamp owners to think of their lamp as a pet, although man’s best friend probably doesn’t have to start looking too closely over his shoulder.

WAKE UP WORLD

JUNE 2nd, 2010

The beeping of an alarm clock is enough to send a shiver down most spines. It is inextricably linked to thoughts of bleary eyes, hurried showers and wolfed down breakfasts. This unpleasant feeling was obviously in the mind of the creators of the Wake Up World app for the iphone. The social alarm clock supplies you with a username and secret code. You then share your code with other Wake up World users, who in turn can choose a video to be played at the time you set your alarm to go off. Altogether a more pleasant start to the day.

USED BIKE TIRES AND FURNITURE LEGS

MAY 27th, 2010

Given a pair of furniture legs and used bike tire tubes the average person might at best come up with with some kind of homemade catapult. The cunning folks at SystemDesignStudio have gone at least one better. In a bit of recycling inspiration of the sort not seen since Murdock and the A-Team were in full flow, the team have created the ElasticShelf. Easily re-creatable at home, the shelf definitively proves the old saying that one man’s junk is another man’s bookshelf.

DISSOLVEABLE DRESSES

MAY 17th, 2010

If there is one product that even the most sustainable of us hope to use only once it’s the wedding dress. As  popping on a wedding dress for the weekly big shop is currently frowned upon, British researchers have developed a rather fabulous one-time wearable gown that can be dissolved in water afterward at no cost to the environment. A brilliant idea, although i would suggest checking the weather forecast before going ahead as a spot of English summer rain might prove inconvenient.

NOAH TRUMPED

MAY 4th, 2010

Apparently 15% of americans believe that the Rapture is going to occur in their lifetime, and what with the decline of the honeybee’s and the melting of the icecaps there is definitely an apocalyptic feel to modern life. Designers Axl Mundl perhaps had this in mind when they were asked to design an eco-conscious house in Montana that was both contemporary and relating to Montana’s ancient landscape. The result of this fairly demanding brief is the Ark House.

The Ark house has two huge cathedral roofs. The first covering a vast space that leads to a staircase and then a bridge suspended over a pond, after which the living space comes into view. Much like the original Ark, the Ark House boasts a near zero energy profile, utilising a high performance envelope, a ground source heat pump and solar panels. WIND POWERED KNITTING MACHINE

APRIL 29th, 2010

London wind has been idly blowing about not pulling it’s weight since Londinium was founded back in Roman times. Not any more. In a some-would-say ironic turn of events, wind is being used to manufacture wind repelling neck material, or scarves to the layman. Designer Merel Karhof has created a wind powered machine that constantly knits a scarf giving a handy visualisation of the powers and applications of urban wind power. Every now and then, the wool is ‘harvested’ and turned into individual scarves.
