The first ever ‘Green School’ designed to teach children all across the world how to live sustainably in a complex 21st-century world opens in September 2008.
The Green School is based on an eight-hectare campus in Sibang Kaja, divided by the Ayung River with classrooms, libraries, laboratories and kitchens located on the western bank. Aquaculture ponds, organic vegetable gardens, edible mazes and permacultural gardens are scattered throughout the large campus built from low-impact and environmentally conscious materials. Students are required to become involved in everything from manufacturing their own chocolate to helping to manage the campus’ organic fields, bamboo plantations and rice paddies.
